BREAKWATERS OF THE PORT OF ODESSA

Breakwaters of the port of Odesa. The port’s harbors are protected by three hydraulic rectilinear gravity breakwaters of different sizes.

 

An old breakwater designed by K. Gartley was being constructed from 1879 to 1882 to protect the port’s harbours from the Quarantine to Practical harbours including. 

It was also necessary to protect the railway overpass. The breakwater consisted of arrays of 100 t. its length is 1222 m and the height of the wall is 8.56 m. In 1921 and 1945 the overhaul of the breakwater was completed after the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War.

 

The New Breakwater was being constructed from 1923 to 1925. Its length is 850 m and the height of the wall is 10.5 m. this breakwater was designed to protect the northern part of the port from the Oil Harbour to Zavodskaya Harbour inclusive. The New

 

Breakwater was constructing by Y.A. Bakhmetev from 1913 to 1914 before the beginning of the construction of Khlebnaya Harbour. The First World War disrupted the construction. After the Great Patriotic War in 1945 the overhaul of the breakwater was completed.

 

Fencing spur Shipyard "Ukraine" (1962) consists of two courses of concrete arrays installed in one row on a stone bed. The length of the breakwater is 770 m.

 

It is planned to construct the fourth breakwater 900 m long designed to protect the reclaimed territory of Quarantine Mole against northern, north-western and eastern winds. At the base of the breakwater there is stone and concrete bed (width is 60-70 m). From the sea side the construction is defended by two rows of concrete slabs.
